WOW!!! How do put into words what we have seen transpire over the past 72 hours? Ever since Mel Zelaya was removed from office, we have agonized over whether our team should go to Honduras or not. 72 hours ago we decided to commit to going unless God clearly closed the door. 24 hours ago we began wondering what door we should be looking at. The most obvious one was the closing of the airport in Teguc. But we began wondering if there was another door we should be looking at.
As we went to bed Thursday night Mel Zelaya and an entourage of supporters and journalists had made their way up to the Honduran Nicaraguan border. What would he do Friday morning? Or Friday afternoon? Or Saturday morning?
As we all watched and wondered, there were two discussions taking place, one at the mission house of World Gospel Outreach in Tegucigalpa, Honduras and the other by phone between two offices in Cary, IL. As Jeff Johnson and I assessed the situation, we came to the conclusion that it just didn't make sense to take the team into the midst of a political unknown. Though we knew Honduras well, something was different, something just didn't seem right. We didn't know what conclusion the leadership of WGO would come to but as hard as it was for us to make the decision, we felt God was saying "Don't go"
I was scheduled to receive a phone from Honduras at 2 pm our time. But shortly before 1 pm my cell phone rang and caller id announced that World Gospel Outreach was on the line. I wondered what they would say. Much to my delight as I listened to the first few sentence from Mike Ferguson, I realized that what God had confirmed in our hearts in Cary, IL he had also confirmed in the hearts of the WGO leadership. There was the door!! It was a closed airport or canceled flights. It was God speaking through His servants and bringing them to one mind and one spirit.
The last thing we wanted was for the trip to be canceled. But the first thing we wanted was for us to do what God wanted us to do. It took us all the way to the last day to know what that was, but God was right on time.
I must confess that it is a whole lot easier when God is early, but what's the adventure in that!
Since our Plan A got canceled, we moving ahead on Plan B which is to help a single mom with five children repaint the outside of her house. Hey, if we can't serve in Honduras, we can serve here. After all, that is one of the goals of each mission trip, equip to serve back home.
Keep praying for the people of Honduras, the ministry of World Gospel Outreach and our team as we serve next week. Hey for much of the world, Cary, IL is a foreign country!!
